Forest Hills Real Estate: Forest Hills, NY This area was first named "Whitepot," supposedly because the land had originally been purchased from the Indians for three white clay pots, although the name has also been attributed to the Dutch word "put," meaning pit. The name was changed in 1906 by Cord Meyer to Forest Hills, because it adjoins Forest Park and is the highest point in that neighborhood. Most of the area's apartment buildings were constructed during the 1930s and 40s. The West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills Gardens hosted the U.S. Open tennis tournament from 1918 until 1978, when the competition moved to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Forest Hills has two shopping areas: national chain and independent stores can be found along 71st Ave./Continental Ave., Austin Street and Queens Boulevard, while Metropolitan Avenue is known for its unique antique shops.
